Strengthening
Bodies, Minds, and Community
Rykyu Kempo Karate
One student at a time, Wasenshikan (Place of the Peaceful Warrior) builds character, perseverance, strength, and confidence with the practice of traditional martial arts. All students are welcome regardless of age, fitness, background, or skill level. We welcome neurodiverse and non-traditional students.
Our classes focus on acceptance, respect, and compassion for ourselves and those around us while we grow physically and mentally. Classes encourage students to acknowledge where they are, listen to their bodies, and strive to expand their capabilities.
“Real” karate in a community center?
There’s a common expectation that community center programs may be “light” versions of what you find in a dojo. Wasenshikan is run out of a community center to reduce overhead costs and introduce karate in a community-based setting so a broad range of students can participate. Unlike dojos centered on profit, belt testing in Wasenshikan is affordable and meaningful.
Adam Frey, founder and head instructor, is a fifth-degree black belt and respected part of the international United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance (URKA). Each summer, Adam brings students to test for black belts and test at the URKA headquarters in Missouri. Our students have a reputation for being fierce, respectful, competent, and confident.
